What is Coub?

Coub is a social media platform that was founded in New York in 2012 by brothers Anton and Igor Gladkoborodov and it’s available on both the App Store for iPhones and Google Play for Android phones. Coub is like YouTube for but for short video loops – it allows users to create and share looping videos of up to ten seconds using existing video from YouTube, Vimeo, stock websites or uploaded personal clips. In a way it’s similar to Twitter, but instead of sharing thoughts limited to 280 characters, the videos and animations that are shared are limited to just 10 seconds.

These ten second videos, called Coubs, allow the user to take any video, trim it down, cut in other short clips, then add music or sound effects. Once cut together on Coub they can be set to loop, play backwards or ping pong (in this instance the Coub plays from the start for 10 seconds then plays in reverse before looping again from the start). Although Coub videos can only be a maximum of 10 seconds long, the background music can run for minutes – if your editing and timing is really tight then this can make for some really creative visuals as the same video loop will repeat in time to ever changing music.

Coubs come in all sorts of styles and there are categories for animals, blogging, comedy, animation, movies, gaming, music, sports, science, travel, dance and more. View example Coubs that feature tracks by Scambler Music below.
